The Works of Michael McConnell
On abortion, Bush v. Gore and more.

Wednesday, September 18, 2002 12:01 A.M. EDT

Today the Senate Judiciary Committee holds a hearing on Michael McConnell's nomination to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. President Bush nominated Mr. McConnell, a University of Utah law professor, more than 16 months ago, and liberal interest groups are targeting him for defeat in the Democrat-controlled committee. Mr. McConnell has contributed thoughtful essays on the law to The Wall Street Journal for nearly 15 years, and we reprint a selection of them here:

On the Supreme Court:
"We Need Justices Who Mean Business, July 27, 1988
"Supreme Humility" (on assisted suicide), July 2, 1997
"Roe v. Wade at 25: Still Illegitimate," Jan. 22, 1998
"Let the States Do It, Not Washington," March 29, 1999

On freedom of speech:
"Free Speech Outside Abortion Clinics," March 31, 1993
"A Constitutional Campaign Finance Plan," Dec. 11, 1997

On Bush v. Gore:
    "Supremely Ill-Judged," Nov. 24, 2000
    "A Muddled Ruling," Dec. 14, 2000
