Melanie Kirkpatrick
Melanie Kirkpatrick is a deputy editor of The Wall Street Journal's editorial
page and a member of the editorial board. She is responsible for all of the
editorial page's international operations, including the opinion pages of the
Wall Street Journal in Asia and Europe, the Far Eastern Economic Review, and the
U.S. columnists on foreign affairs. She also leads the editorial page's business
development, supervises OpinionJournal.com, and serves as a member of the board
of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.
Ms. Kirkpatrick joined Dow Jones in 1980 as a copy editor for The Asian Wall Street Journal in Hong Kong and was named associate editor of its Commentary & Analysis page in 1981. She became the Asian Journal's editorial features editor in 1984.
In January 1987, she moved to New York to become deputy editorial features editor for the domestic Journal and was appointed editorial features editor in March 1990. She was named assistant editor of the Journal's editorial page and a member of the editorial board in April 1992 and had oversight of the editorial features department. In October 2001, Melanie became associate editor responsible for the daily Review & Outlook column. She was named to her current position as deputy editor of the editorial page in April 2006.
Ms. Kirkpatrick received the 2001 Mary Morgan Hewett Award for Women in Journalism. The annual award recognizes a woman journalist who has demonstrated commitment, hard work and expanding influence throughout her career.
Prior to joining Dow Jones, Ms. Kirkpatrick worked at Time-Life Educational Systems in Tokyo from 1974 to 1977 and at the Buffalo (N.Y.) Courier-Express from 1978 to 1979.
Ms. Kirkpatrick received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and a master's degree from the University of Toronto. She was a Gannett Newspaper Foundation Fellow in Asian studies at the University of Hawaii. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a trustee of Princeton-in-Asia, an internship program in Asia for young college graduates.
Ms. Kirkpatrick and her husband, Jack David, live in New York City and northwest Connecticut.
